Hair Tutorial – Braid Out: How I Did It

Braid out natural curly tutorial how to howto hair long woman braidout

I got around to trying the rhassoul clay I mentioned in this post. It was easy to use, it smells subtly sweet and rinsed out quickly.

So far, I’m am really excited about the results.

After cleansing my hair with a rinse I made using the clay and I water, I styled it in one of my best braid-outs ever!  My hair was shiny, moist and well defined.

Also, I must mention, as I was styling my hair and applied “product” the texture felt “off”. It felt stiff and gluey. I’m chalking it up to a Ph imbalance and hopefully I can correct it with some aloe juice next time around. I’ll keep ya posted.

If you’d like to see the step-by-step, styling process take a peek at the video here.

On My Radar

OMR

1. Fiddle Fig Everything.

Earlier this past summer I scored a super cute, faux,  fiddle fig leaf plant from Home Goods and have been wanting to find a photo or painting to pair with it ever since. While searching for inspiration I came across these gorgeous pillows on Etsy.  The fiddle fig leaf plant was very popular this summer but I’m still loving it.  I was enamored before summer hit and tried finding a plant during winter, but couldn’t find it anywhere. I’m so happy I found it and love how the green adds a splash of color to my home and I’m sure it will be uplifting during fall/winter months to come.

2. Rhassoul Clay

Rhassoul Clay has been on my mind for a very long time and I think it’s time for me to take action and give it a try.  I usually do my clay washes with Aztec clay, but research is telling that rhassoul clay is supposed to be amazing as well, if not better. If you want to see how I make my Hair Wash/No Shampoo wash see my video here.

3. Paper Trimmer

I’m so excited to have finally purchased this paper trimmer! It’s the small things, LOL! I finished decorating my office but left hanging my photos on my To Do list for longer than I care to admit.

4. Lemons

For the last few days I have been using lemon as an all natural deodorant.  FYI, it doesn’t prevent sweating, but it does stop odor by killing the bacteria that causes it. I’m also curious to see if it will lighten my underarms.  I had an allergic reaction to a new deodorant I decided to try this past summer and want to try the natural route for lightening.  I will keep you guys posted on my results.

5. Running Shoes

I have been motivating myself to get back on the-good-foot to eating well and exercising.  I have never been much of a runner, but I know how slimming it is and would like to do some slimming and trimming after my recent pregnancy.  I would like to take these Nikes for a spin, again, if I decide to get them I will keep you all posted.

My First Shampoo

Homemade Deep Conditioner all natural healthy easy fastHomemade Deep Conditioner all natural healthy easy fastHomemade Deep Conditioner all natural healthy easy fast

Hey guys,

So, I had an opportunity to try Shea Moisture’s Moisture Retention Shampoo for the first time and it was great!

As I mentioned in my latest haul video/post, I had not shampooed my hair in 5 years!

It was due to my discomfort with the ingredients listed on most shampoo products and greatly due to my scalp itching like I had fleas whenever I did shampoo.  I cannot say that shampooing will become a regular practice for me, but I will try again in the future since it was faster than having to make my clay wash. And after almost a week I have had zero itchiness. I shot a video detailing my conditioning process if you’d like to take a peek here.

Also, in the video I share my recipe for my homemade deep conditioner:

1/2 Ripe Banana
1/2 Avocado
2.5 Tbsp of Coconut Oil.

I slept with the conditioner over night and rinsed it out in the morning. I did not apply any additional product until I styled the following day, yet it felt super, sponge cake moist and soft!

For styling, I shot a video that I will share soon, but I used Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Eco Styler Gel to set my waves.  I had a chance to use that bonnet I mentioned a few posts back as well!  I LOOOOOOVE IT!

Hope you like!

Let me know if you decide to try the deep conditioning recipe!

Hair Dryer: Soft Hood Attachment

This just in: Hooded Dryer attachment for standard blow dryers.

I found it on Amazon, it has pretty good reviews so I’m really looking forward to trying it out!

I’ve seen that a number of Naturals are raving about similar ones and wondered if I’d love it as much. I plan to use it to deep condition (which I haven’t done in years) and set my flat twists when they require flexy rollers.

Wish me luck, I’ll keep you all posted!

How I Moisturize Between Washes

long, curly, natural, 4c hair, black woman, girl

Hey guys!

Here’s a video of my moisturizing process. I have had a number of people ask me how I keep my hair from getting extra dry between washes and thought a video would be a fun illustration. I usually try to explain it to them in detail, but I think a visual aid is always more captive and helpful.

In a nutshell, I use Shea butter, water and most recently i’ve added Shea Moisture Reconstructing Conditioner back into the mix. My goal is to be effective and keep it simple.

If I’m in a hurry and want to quickly moisturize, I only use water and Shea butter.

Finger Combing

I have had a number of people ask me what I mean when I tell them I finger comb (or finger detangle) my hair, so I decided to shoot video and shared it here:

I stopped combing my hair years ago after realizing that I was literally pulling it out. I tried many different types of combs and styling tools and found that my hands do a much better job than anything I had ever tried.  For me, I now know that simplicity is key.  I also don’t tie my hair up, wear a bonnet or scarf for bed .  I found that tying my hair up caused my edges to break off badly, so at night I moisturize, re-twist or do large braids.    This routine works for me and I now see a significant difference in the stat of my hair.  I hope my video is helpful!
